Shadeed Iron & Steel, the Omani producer of direct reduced iron owned by India’s Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL), has placed a $100 million order with Danieli for the supply of a new rebar mill, Shadeed plant manager M.P. Charyulu told Platts on Monday.
The 1.4 million metric tons/year rolling mill is scheduled for start-up in the first quarter of 2015 and will be fed by Jindal Shadeed’s new 2 million mt/y electric arc furnace-based billet plant, undergoing commissioning this month. Surplus billet will be sold to seamless pipemakers and re-rollers in the Middle East and North Africa.
In order to support the steelmaking expansion, the Omani plant’s DRI/HBI production capacity has been expanded to 1.8 million mt/y. It will later be doubled to 3.6 million mt/y. A 7 million mt/y iron ore pelletizing plant is also due to be installed to feed the DRI plants, as previously reported.
