A Texas company has entered into an agreement to buy the Gerdau Ameristeel steel plant in Baldwin. Commercial Metals Co. of Irving, Texas, agreed to buy 33 Gerdau facilities in the United States for $600 million.
The Baldwin plant grinds and melts metal from old cars, appliances, etc., and turns into rebar (reinforcing bar used in concrete) and wire.
According to statistics the company gave the Times-Union in 2016, each year the mill turns about 1.1 billion pounds of scrap metal into 150,000 miles of rebar and 18,000 miles of wire rod.
It has 280 employess and is located off US 301 and Interstate 10 in Baldwin.
